X-ray variability time scales in Active Galactic Nuclei
نویسنده
چکیده
X-ray variability in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is commonly analysed in terms of the Power Spectral Density (PSD). The break observed in the power spectrum can be interpreted as a characteristic X-ray variability time scale. Here we study variability properties within the framework of clumpy accretion flows, in which shocks between accreting elements account for the UV and X-ray emissions. We derive a characteristic X-ray time scale, τX , and compare it with the measured PSD break time scale, TB. A quite good agreement is found in both magnitude and trend. In particular, the model dependence on black hole mass and accretion rate precisely reproduces the empirical relation obtained by McHardy et al. (2006). We suggest a possible physical interpretation of the break time scale and briefly discuss the related aspects of optical/UV variability and correlations between different wavelengths.

X-ray Variability of Active Galactic Nuclei and the Flare Model
Short-term variability of X-ray spectra has been reported for several Active Galactic Nuclei. Significant X-ray flux variations are observed within time scales down to 10—10 seconds. We discuss short variability time scales in the framework of the X-ray flare model, which assumes the release of a large hard X-ray flux above a small portion of the accretion disk. The resulting observed X-ray spe...
متن کاملTIMESCALES OF SOFT X-RAY VARIABILITY AND PHYSICAL CONSTRAINTS IN AGNs
We present soft X-ray variability time-scales for 65 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) derived from ROSAT/PSPC pointing data. For these 65 objects with obvious exponential increasing or decreasing patterns in their light curves, we use the exponential time-scales and find they are more suitable for analyzing ROSAT light curve data. We also discuss some physical constraints on the central engine imp...
متن کاملSAX J1808.4-3658 and the origin of X-ray variability in X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei
The aperiodic X-ray variability in neutron star and black hole X-ray binaries (XRBs), and active galactic nuclei (AGN) shows a characteristic linear relationship between rms amplitude and flux, implying a multiplying-together or ‘coupling’ of variability on different time-scales. Such a coupling may result from avalanches of flares, due to magnetic reconnection in an X-ray emitting corona. Alte...
متن کاملAn Expanded Rxte Survey of X-ray Variability in Seyfert 1 Galaxies
The first seven years of RXTE monitoring of Seyfert 1 active galactic nuclei have been systematically analyzed to yield five homogeneous samples of 2–12 keV light curves, probing hard X-ray variability on successively longer durations from ∼1 day to ∼3.5 years. 2–10 keV variability on time scales of ∼1 day, as probed by ASCA, are included. All sources exhibit stronger X-ray variability towards ...
